Caro Kann Gone Wrong

by Clark Kent
(India)

The Caro Kann has a name as a sturdy defense that is hard to break down. But in this game White tears it apart in just 11 moves with terrific play. A Knight sacrifice followed by a Queen sacrifice leads to a devastating mate.

1.e4 c6

Caro Kann Opening

2.d4 d5

Standard Caro Kann moves.

3.Nc3 dxe4 4.Nxe4 Nf6 5.Qd3

The standard move is Nxf6 as it disturbs Black's pawn structure.

5...e5

This is a bad move as Black is opening the position too early. Only one Black piece is developed.

6.dxe5

threatens Black's only developed piece.

6...Qa5+

Replies by threatening the pawn on e5 and checking the King.

7.Bd2

Perfect defense as it threatens the Black Queen, develops a piece and makes way for Queenside castling.

7...Qxe5 8.O-O-O

Develops the Rook and sacrifices the Knight.

8...Nxe4

If 8...Qxe4 9.Re1 pins the Queen.

9.Qd8+

Queen sacrifice starts off a devastating attack.

9...Kxd8

Only move.

10.Bg5+

Double check.

10...Ke8

One of two moves. If 10...Kc7, 11. Bd8# is checkmate.

11.Rd8#

That is how the cookie crumbles for Black.

Play through this quick-fire tactical melee for some real shooting from the hip chess.

Risky
by: Nekoj Nekojski

While the play is remarkable, there is always the risk factor of Black seeing the plan and not really following the typical way a defensive player would move. This could work against many, but not always. Experienced players who have seen this might turn this back to you simply because they know what you are up to.

Fortune Favors the Bold
by: Billy Wong

Well sometimes it does anyway, and it looks like it did in this case. Great presence of mind and confidence by the White player to sense an opportunity and go after it all out throwing caution to the wind.

Anxious Black Loses Again
by: Roberto Martinez

Black should wait until White loses a turn to take the initiative or suffer heavy losses and lose the game as in this case. So don't be too eager to attack if you are Black, it is better to counter attack.

Beautiful Queen Sacrifice
by: J Pabon

I love a good chess game, and this one was terrific. Nice play. I love that the Queen and Knight were sacrificed. Most people are not so willing to give up their Queen and I enjoyed seeing that happen. It's amazing what a good sacrifice can do.

Ancient Defense Trick
by: T Ramamoorthy

The Caro Kann move as a ancient defense trick that is difficult to cross over. But in this battle, for White to find the mate in just eleven moves is just trick play. Sacrifice the Knight and Queen leads to a check mate. But still sometimes Caro Kann and sometimes Caro Kann can't.

CK Brilliantly Refuted

That was a very interesting game. To dismantle the Caro Kann like that in just 11 moves! Everything about White's play in the game is superb. Two sacrifices in quick succession and then mate! That's how to play chess.
